Absent Voter’s Register for Hethersett for 1918
We are very grateful to Lewis Buckingham who has provided the following details and transcripts.
Those eligible had to submit their application to vote by August 1918, so this list should show the details of men from that date. It was published in October. There are further registers each Spring and Autumn up to 1921. As of 1918, men of 19-20 years of age were given the right to vote for the first time - by virtue of serving in the armed forces. It reminds me a little of Romans becoming citizens only after serving in the legions.
You’ll see members of the Army, Air Force and the Navy listed, but some names have no details at all. These may have not actually served in the forces per se, but been involved in work recognised by the Admiralty, Army Council, or Air Council. A list given as examples on findmypast is merchant seamen, fishermen, and those working for the Red Cross. There may also be women over the age of 30 working in the Women’s Auxiliary Army, but I didn’t come across any.
It won’t cover those at home who worked in, for example, munitions etc. Those workers weren’t actually absent, being registered wherever they lived near their work during the war (Two members of my family from Hethersett moved to Leeds and London respectively to take part in war work.)
This list (137 men), along with Hethersett’s Roll of Honour (17), should in theory cover Hethersett’s contribution to the forces (154 all up - 11% died as a result of the war). Some may still have fallen through the cracks, and this list only covers those who still had homes or next of kin in Hethersett. It won’t cover anyone born in Hethersett who later on moved away.
In some cases the rank isn’t given, and/or the unit is non-specific (i.e. “Norfolks” without a battalion number). This is a bit surprising considering that the men had to submit their applications themselves - they weren’t filled out by family members at home on their behalf. The later registers might correct or fill in the blanks. In at least one case two brothers are given the same serial number, so something’s gone wrong there.
There are a lot of acronyms - some easier to figure out than others - but a good site to figure out what things mean, and perhaps a bit about the background of the unit itself, is accessible by clicking here.
Something to remember about the units listed is that soldiers were often transferred between units, so the unit listed is only where they were in August 1918. Sometimes their Serial Numbers were also changed with their transfer, though this wasn’t always the case.
